Close to 50 million adults experience intimate partner violence in the US according to the CDC - 3 million more than those estimated to experience mental illness by Mental Health America.  Mental health professionals study mental illness every day, yet domestic violence is still not widely understood even by professionals offering therapy.

Awareness decreases even further when talking about the most vulnerable individuals experiencing it - our children and youth. Children in homes with domestic violence see, hear, and are affected by it in a variety of ways that impact the way they understand themselves, their families, and their world. These young survivors need clinical support, services, and care from therapists to help them with the complicated challenges of domestic violence while growing up.

The Best Practices for Therapists Helping Child & Youth Survivors of Domestic Violence training addresses the variety of experiences, needs, and best practices that can help children and youth in families with domestic violence feel safer, more empowered, and less burdened by feelings of shame, blame, and guilt.  In this two-day, virtual training, therapists will be provided with information, tools, knowledge, and strategies to use in direct practice with children, youth, and their non-abusive parents, including:

• Discussing the multiple ways children experience domestic violence
• Building a trusting relationship with the non-abusive parent
• Gaining tools to develop a child-centered safety plan
• Understanding the impact of the abusive parent’s behavior on the child and family dynamic
• Exploring evidence-based clinical interventions for best practice, including details for using play therapy to work with these children
