Survivors of domestic violence often have a complicated relationship with the criminal justice system. Recent research suggests up to 77% of incarcerated women are survivors of domestic violence. Survivors seeking services from domestic violence agencies may be facing criminal charges that are directly related to the abuse they’ve suffered. Navigating these complexities can be challenging for advocates seeking to provide effective advocacy to criminalized survivors. This hybrid training is the first in a two-part training series designed to help advocates better understand and support criminalized survivors of domestic violence. Topics included in the training are:

·       How and why survivors of domestic violence are criminalized.

·       Challenges faced by criminalized survivors in access help through domestic violence agencies and the legal system.

·       Current legal remedies available to criminalized survivors.

·       Ways to enhance effective advocacy for criminalized survivors.
