Welcome to our Policy Roundtable, an event created to bring together stakeholders and community members to discuss policy issues impacting criminalized survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault across Georgia. This event is hosted by the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Alston & Bird, and the Georgia Justice Project. Discussion will be facilitated between these three organizations, and guest speaker Leigh Goodmark, the Marjorie Cook Professor of Law at the University of Maryland Frances King Carey School of Law. Professor Goodmark has conducted extensive research on the criminal legal system and gendered violence, represented many cases involving criminalized survivors, and written several books on this issue; most recently, Imperfect Victims: Criminalized Survivors and the Promise of Abolition Feminism, which was published this year.
At this roundtable we hope to have fruitful, meaningful discussion about ways that we can shape the law to better protect and advocate for the release of criminalized survivors. Topics will include interventions that could occur in various points in time, including pre-arrest, at trial, at sentencing, and post-conviction. In this discussion, it is critical that we have the input of professionals and community members who understand this issue and whose work touches criminalized survivors, their families, and their communities. We invite you to join us and offer your insight, knowledge, and experience to this important conversation.
This is a hybrid event. We are excited to share with you all our new hybrid technology in our office that allows both online and in-person participants to actively participate in discussion together and fully enjoy the event. We are offering designated online and in-person sign-up options. Unfortunately, due to size restraints in our office, we will have to put a limit on the number of attendees who can be with us in person. We will give in-person space to registrants on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to attend in person, please be sure to register as soon as you are able.
