Event Details

Muslim survivors of domestic violence experience unique and complex cultural and legal barriers to safety and to accessing legal services and support. This training, provided by Noor Family Services in partnership with GCADV, will identify and explain these barriers, including culture and language, the role of community and family, components of an Islamic marriage, and the interaction of Islamic marriage and divorce with Georgia law. After attending this training, advocates will be able to:

• Determine safety concerns related to the survivor’s interdependence with their community, extended family and friends

• Recognize both the literal and figurative language barriers, especially with terms such as “divorce”

• Illustrate the complexities of child custody for Muslim parents in a secular court system

• Identify resources and partnerships within the advocate’s community to provide additional support and to connect with Muslim survivors
