This training is only for practicing attorneys who work with survivors of domestic violence. Please do not register for this training if you are not an attorney.

We don’t talk enough about how to navigate the inherent conflicts between the practices that win contested hearings, the strategies for getting best negotiated outcomes, and the trauma-informed practices for supporting violence survivors. This session will fix that.

In this session, we will talk about key tools for listening to and communicating with clients about litigation in a trauma-informed manner, with a keen focus on the pressures that can drive us, the lawyers, to focus more on “winning the case” than supporting the client to “win the life”.

Specifically, our learning objectives will be to:

• Identify the structures and pressures of domestic violence trial work that impede our ability to support our clients in a trauma-informed manner

• Learn concrete phrases, questions, and meeting practices that will improve our ability to support our clients to define their goals, tolerance for risk, and plans for managing traumatic responses

• Name specific actions that each of us will implement to improve our ability to provide trauma-informed litigation services to violence survivors.
