Natural disasters and large-scale emergencies disrupt far more than infrastructure. They can interrupt communication, transportation, housing, staffing, and the systems survivors of domestic violence rely on for safety. At the same time, domestic violence programs may be called upon to make rapid, high-stakes decisions while balancing survivor safety, staff well-being, confidentiality, service continuity, and organizational sustainability.
GCADV’s three-part Ready to Respond webinar series will introduce member programs to Ready to Respond: Practical Guidance for Disaster Planning, Response, and Recovery for Georgia Domestic Violence Programs, a new resource developed specifically for Georgia’s domestic violence service system.
Across three interactive webinars, presenters Jennifer Thomas and Jenny Aszman will guide participants through the resource’s three primary sections: building a disaster-ready organization, leading during an active disaster, and recovering after a disaster. Participants will explore practical strategies, decision-making considerations, and ready-to-use tools that programs can adapt to their own structure, resources, facilities, staff, and survivor needs.
The series is grounded in the same principles that guide the resource itself: survivor self-determination, confidentiality, trauma-informed practice, equity and accessibility, staff well-being, collaboration, flexibility, and compassionate decision-making. Participants will also be introduced to the guide’s appendices and templates and consider how they can be incorporated into agency policies, staff training, emergency binders, drills, and ongoing organizational planning.
